These days there are too many “semi pro” SEO consultants who are using obsolete and incorrect optimization techniques. And some of the less reputable and lower quality SEO companies are still optimizing their customers websites using methods that are designed to please the search engines without giving any consideration to the readers of the website, which doesn’t make much sense to me as generally the search engines don’t spend very much money each time they spider the site.
The content on a website must be intended for your prospective customers and existing clients as a primary aim, and search engines as a secondary objective, this balance is the key to converting the traffic you receive into sales. If you cant do that then all the traffic in the world wont help. The prudent money would go on ten visitors who are looking to buy, rather than one hundred visitors who leave within two seconds.
One nasty trick used by less reputable SEO companies is to claim a “special relationship with google”. I recently had an encounter with such a firm only a few days ago, a client I work for provides marketing services for lots of other companies, he had been quoting for an seo job with the intention of reselling my SEO Services and making a small commission for himself. Regrettably, mid process, the client was telephoned by a poor quality company who told him that because they are one of only two companies in the UK that have “a special relationship with google”, that they are privileged to otherwise secret information. they then went on to tell the client that google shares with them top secret data about keyword traffic levels and because of this they are in a special position which allows them to find the best keywords to use. Absolute rubbish, for a start the information they describe is readily available to any person with an Internet connection via googles own adwords keywords tool.
Secondary to this, googles own statement about SEO in its web master tools help section says to beware of claims like this as they are totally fictitious. It goes on to say that claims of this nature have been known to be used by disreputable firms. Of course I quickly pasted a link to the google web master page in an email and fired it off to my marketing reseller hoping to be able to warn the poor unsuspecting client in time to stop him from being ripped off, but unfortunately I was too late. The deal had been sealed by the SEO company guaranteeing him a page one position or his money back!
Another dirty trick! I couldn’t believe it, I knew as soon as I heard this that the poor unfortunate client had not even considered finding out if the page one ranking would be a keyword he specifies! So now he has paid then £1000 for setup costs and is also paying a subsequent £200 pcm, and at the end of it when he still has no traffic and demands his money back, the SEO consultancy will pull a google page one out of the hat for the keyword “cheap hats in Oakley Bradford Yorkshire” which probably has never been searched for, or ever will by anyone. And thats it, they are off the hook and walk away with the clients money having fulfilled their side of the obligation. The moral of the story? Be alert! Try to find a consultant that someone you knows has recommended. I am not saying all SEO companies are bad, or even that all SEO Services except mine are bad, on the contrary there are many firms who have excellent standards, but just like most other businesses, there are also less scrupulous people waiting to take your cash an play you for a fool.
